I honestly don’t know what to make of this! I feel excitement and outrage all at the same time.
A home letterpress machine … really?!? I’m super curious, that’s for sure.
But as a past stationery shop owner … my heart doesn’t feel right doing this at home. What about all the designers out there with the real deal? Working hard on the old-time machines?
Doesn’t this little, do-it-yourself machine cheapen the thrill your finger feels as it fondles that ever-so-gently-kissed indent on the most luxurious of papers?
And yeah … I’m freaky like that.
do I feel a giveaway coming on?
I had that same reaction! At first I thought it was great for quick and easy projects – but you’re so right, there’s something to be said for the handcraft and love that goes into the real deal. Call me a traditionalist, but there’s something about what the old-school letterpress can create that I have a feeling isn’t quite up to par with this little guy….
I wished they didn’t call it a “letterpress” machine. Having printed on real letterpress before, letterpress printing is honest to goodness hardwork and an artform. I think this hobby machine really cheapens the art of letterpress. Just my 2cents (and a traditionalist when it comes to paper stuff). :-)
ooooh that is interesting. but i’m with you… kind of cheapens the whole thing. sad!
Tracie,
I was going to email you and ask you what you thought of that machine! I want one desperately to make business cards and marketing material for my photography business. :)
I want one so bad, as soon as they have custom plates available where I can make my logos and whatnot. I love stationary shops but all the letterpress research I’m doing for business cards are SO expensive. The small-business owners are FAR more expensive than the big-time letterpress printers…
I adore letterpress too… so my heart did skip a beat when I first heard the news. What is it about us paper fanatics?? I used to own scrapbooking store— and with your stationary store— you know we don’t need ANYTHING!!!! It’s so hard to resist all the new toys and products.
If I win the lottery I’ll build a studio with a real letterpress and you can come visit anytime!
