a birthday treat

Good morning lovelies!  I can’t sleep and feel like I’ve been behind on some things I want to post about … so here’s one I’m throwing out there!

I found this recipe in an old Betty Crocker cookbook.  The paperback kind that you can subscribe to or find in the grocery store line?  I’ve got piles of them.  Serious piles.

Anyway.  I was looking through them the other day for a banana bread recipe and came across a Halloween edition.

As I was flipping through it, I found this awesome recipe/craft and Wynter thought it’d be perfect for her class birthday treat.

cookie birthday treat

The original recipe is super simple and calls for prepackaged cookie dough, prepackaged vanilla frosting, green food coloring, pretzels, and m&m’s.  They also had you cutting out Fall colored leaves from food-safe {colored} wax paper that you can find at a food specialty store, to use under the caterpillar.

But …

When you’re making this 10 minutes before heading out the door for school, as I knew I would … and did … then let me simplify further for you …

Caterpillar Cookie Craft

First, smash the oreos in a plastic bag {ziploc brand recommended}.  That will make the “dirt” for your little creature.  Then take a cookie and squirt frosting on the back of it.  Take another cookie, squirt frosting on the back of it, and stick it to the previous cookie.  Repeat until you have enough cookies for the class.  Then stick in your pretzel antenna and legs.  Lastly, dab some frosting on the m&m’s to make your face.  The original recipe didn’t have a nose, but we complicated it and added one.  :)

And waa-la! an easy, adorable, creative, oooing & ahhing treat!

I’d like to caution you that this slippery little sucker doesn’t travel easy.  I wrapped aluminum foil around the edges of the tray and that helped, but the caterpillar itself, really tries to escape … don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Oh! and Wynter’s teacher told me she had the kids dab their cookies on the oreos for an extra layer of sweetness … great idea!

Have fun!

Very Cute! And funny about the cookbook too…another friend just posted a bunch of Haloween-themed dinners she made her kids from the Pillsbury cookbooks! I guess I need to start looking at those things!

Martha pales in comparison to you, my friend. This is awesome. Love how you improvised under the time constraints. And your Ziploc comment totally made me giggle. Good product placement!! :-)
