The wise man built his house upon the rock.
The foolish man built his house upon the sand.
Have you heard that before? As a child, I used to sing a cute little ditty with the words, “the wise man built his house upon the rock … the rains came down and the floods came up and the house on the rock stood firm. The foolish man built his house on the sand … the rains came down and the floods came up and the house on the sand went SPLAT.”
Go ahead and take a listen, but don’t blame me if it’s stuck in your head all day!
My pastor used this illustration this past Sunday:
When building or buying a home, what kind of foundation do you
want that home to have? You can decorate with the finest things money can
buy but if your foundation is faulty and built with cheap materials,
it doesn’t matter how it’s decorated.
Let’s think about ourselves for a minute … how are we “decorated?” Do we look good {and in control} from the outside? But our core … our insides … our foundation … is mushy, falling apart, and just a plain ol’ mess?
It takes faith to build your life {house} on the Rock. It takes complete trust to believe in something bigger than yourself. We are a me-me-all-about-me society. We need to handle things ourselves. Control things ourselves. It seems almost impossible to actually give up control.
And that may or may not be working for you.
If it’s not, what’s holding you back from a foundation of faith?
And if it is currently working for you … I challenge you to think about what would happen to your foundation … your core … if you woke up tomorrow to find that your world just fell apart?
{read 31 days of faith from the beginning}
Thank you for the song! I was just trying to teach it to my kids the other day and couldn’t remember all the words. They’ll love the “Splat!”
this is great! So glad to finally get to catch up on all your posts. Keep it up, girl! you rock! :) xoxo
This is really making me think. Hard. And I have a feeling it’s going to continue to work on me as the words “marinate” in my mind. Thank you for making me think.
