lunch n’ read :: ladybug style

I signed up last week to be the lunch n’ read parent in Hunter’s class.  It was a great idea when I signed up and the date worked perfectly.

That is, until a trip I had planned for Thursday, got bumped to Wednesday … the day I signed up to read to Hunter’s class.

Oh! and I should mention, some overachiever parent at some point, decided to “theme” the snack with the book.  Promise it wasn’t me.  But given that I’m not one to fold my cards … I like to raise the ante every now and again.  {and please … I realize that was just a lot of big talk from me!}

Okay … so Hunter and I pick Ladybug Girl to read to her class {the book was in her backpack.  at school.  so this photo was taken with ladybug girl & bumblebee boy.  also an awesome read btw} and I thought we could make some cute ladybug cookies to bring for snack.

Well, I procrastinated and never looked up recipes one thing after another happened and I wasn’t able to actually make the cookies with her.  And … I ended up having to schedule an appointment the morning I was reading to her class, so that gave me about a 40 minute window to rush home, whip up a masterpiece some cookies and get to lunch at her school.

I did finally look up a couple of recipes and found this super cute one, but I knew I wouldn’t have time to pull it off.  So what did I do?  What any wannabe overachieving caring mother would do … I improvised.

So here’s the low-down:

  • you take your basic Oreo cookie
  • your already mixed red frosting {in a pouch}
  • a bag of mini chocolate chips
  • a bag of gumdrops
  • and a bag of twisty licorice {black would be better, but I waited too long to couldn’t find it}
  • and toothpicks {be sure to warn teacher of toothpicks}

Assembly:
Squeeze the frosting onto cookies, then go back through and “slice” a line down the middle to emulate wings.  Then put 2 or 3 chocolate chips on both wings.  Put a toothpick towards the bottom of the gumdrop and poke into the frosting middle of the Oreo.  Then take the licorice and pull apart into 1 inch pieces and sort of just push them onto the gumdrop … surprisingly, they stuck!  And waa-la!  I seriously got this done in about 20 minutes.

Whadda think?  Mom-of-the-year? ;)

    This is one of the cutest things I’ve seen and LOVE that you just whipped it up in about 20 minutes. I’d hate to be the mom that had to follow you :-)
